Let’s remember four Woodward Career Technical High School (Cincinnati Public Schools) students were recognized last year in May by the Hamiton County Board of Commissioners for their heroism after providing critical first aid to classmates who suffered gunshot wounds in two separate incidents in the first half of 2023. The Health Careers Pathway teachers at Woodward Career Technical High School did a great job certifying these students.

The recognized students, credited with remaining calm and applying their Stop the Bleed training, potentially saved lives in these horrific situations. Their bravery is a powerful testament to the importance of CPR and first aid education.

STOP THE BLEED is important for young people to know for several reasons:

• Early intervention is crucial: Severe bleeding can lead to death in as little as 5 minutes. Bystanders with STOP THE BLEED training can take action before emergency services arrive, potentially saving lives.
• Empowerment in emergencies: Young people often witness accidents and injuries. STOP THE BLEED training equips them with the knowledge and skills to act decisively in stressful situations.
• Calmer response: Training can help young people stay calm under pressure, allowing them to make clear decisions and provide better first aid.
• Potential to save someone they know: Unfortunately, young people may encounter violence or accidents involving their peers. STOP THE BLEED knowledge could allow them to help a friend or classmate.
• Wider application: The skills learned in STOP THE BLEED can be applied to a variety of situations beyond severe bleeding, fostering a general sense of preparedness.

In the wake of these shootings, the Woodward Career Technical High School student heroes are a powerful reminder of the difference bystander intervention can make. This certification not only fulfills important graduation criteria but also enhances students' resumes, showcasing valuable life-saving skills.
